We need your support We started Gramajyothi with a strong will and not with money. Yes, money does have a key role in taking things forward. But then the lack of it did not prevent us from delaying things any further or to turn a blind eye to those children who were differently-abled with very low IQ, in and around our area. For the parents of the differently-abled children, each day is a challenge. And the situation becomes painful and worse, if they are having a poor economic, social and education background. To keep a differently-abled child at home needs full time attention In the district of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) where we are based, in the State of Kerala in India, we have about 50 to 60 mentally challenged children with multiple disabilities and very low IQ in each panchayat (village). These children and their parents have special needs. And to meet those needs – they need us and you too. The rehabilitation of the mentally challenged is a burning need of the community. After the parent’s lifetime, the differently-abled become a liability for the community. Thus the rehabilitation of the mentally challenged, differently abled children and the aged is the need of the hour. It is the social responsibility of the community to respond and rise up to the occasion by contributing magnanimously with their time, effort and resources. For the past six years we have been able to reach out to only a ‘drop’ out of the ‘Ocean’ of the differently-abled people, in a rented building. In order to extend our scope of service on a permanent basis to a larger number of people, our urgent requirement is to accommodate the school in a spacious campus with full-fledged hostel facilities for girls and boys. We are also planning to provide a spacious campus with a permanent residence for differently-abled gents and ladies. At the campus, there will be a training centre for occupational therapy with modern facilities, so that these differently-abled people may turn their disabilities into possibilities.
