The Grama Jyothi Special School was inaugurated on the18th of April, 2005 by Smt. K. R. GOURIAMMA ( Hon. Minister for Agriculture , Government of Kerala). The function was presided over by His Grace Rt. Rev. Dr. GEEVARGHESE MAR THEODOSIUS EPISCOPA (Diocesan Bishop, Thiruvananthapuram –Quilon Diocese of the Mar Thoma Church).
Grama Jyothi is a special school for special kids between the ages of 5 to15 who have low I.Q. The school provides a structured environment where individual attention and guidance is given at all times. Students enjoy recreational activities, music , art and horticultural therapy. Besides academics, daily living skills leading to the development of sensory, motor, and perceptional training are imparted. An individual programme for each student is designed to empower the student with the psychological, physiological and intellectual tools necessary for structuring a healthy life style.
The first academic session of the school started on Thursday the 2nd of June 2005, with prayers and blessings by our president, Rev. T. J. Abraham. A word of encouragement to the parents , teachers and management was given by Dr A Philipose (Director , State Institute For The Mentally Handicapped , Pangappara,Trivandrum) Presently the school functions in a rented building that has 20 cents of land with a compound wall. This provides a protected open space for the children to play and for other activities.
